Chapter 16: Maria

I had never been a big fan of the club scene but tonight, I had a reason to go out and let loose. In a matter of weeks, all of my worries would be lifted off of my shoulders and my life would be set. I wouldn’t be completely at ease until Harlem was locked behind bars. My son has been away from me for almost three months. Every night, I cried with thoughts of my baby boy.

Harlem took Cairo from me when he was five months old and he was now approaching eight months. It killed me to know that my own child probably had no recollection of who I was.

I confessed to Marco all that I’ve been going through with Harlem. Marco was irate when I told him about the numerous death threats Harlem has hurled at me. It didn’t take much for me to get Marco on my side. He confessed his own hatred for Harlem for killing Moe. Marco vowed that Moe was innocent and he was partially onto something.

All of them failed to realize that I was the one behind all of this going down. Harlem thought I left Atlanta after he broke up with me, but I actually stayed at the Marriot for two weeks and formulated my form of payback. All it took was one phone call. I called APD and told them about a truck driver by the name of Moe that was set to transport a large quantity of cocaine from Houston to Atlanta. Moe was arrested at Hartsfield International Airport a week later. By then, I was getting settled into my old Brownstone in Harlem.

I didn’t expect Moe to get caught while trying to board a plane to Texas. I definitely didn’t think he would have guns on him. I never thought I would find myself growing feelings for Moe. I was playing him for a while to get him to snitch on Harlem but our relationship took a different turn without me anticipating it.

After receiving five love letters a week from Moe, combined with the numerous visits I had with him, it happened. His death still affects me now but I’ve been telling myself that I’m doing this for him too. I was avenging Moe’s death in my own twisted way.

“Come on! I’m tired of waiting on you!” Miranda screamed from downstairs.

I rolled my eyes and continued to brush my hair in the mirror hanging on my bedroom wall. I almost didn’t recognize myself. It’s been ages since I’d worn makeup and a sexy outfit. I still had some baby weight from Cairo and no motivation to lose it. I was only adding on the pounds by continuously stress eating. I was still a bad bitch, even with the extra weight.

Miranda was going out for her usual Friday night turn up and to her shock, I decided to join her. I was ready to start living my life again. I’ve been working at Harlem Hospital for three months now.
